Kaiju Survivor 0.1.0a - Mecha Game Jam 4 and Alpha Version

Welcome everyone to our first Devlog of Kaiju Survivor

"Kaiju Survivor" is the latest project being developed at our studio. With a high degree of ambition driving our efforts, our aim is to launch "Kaiju Survivor" on platforms such as Steam and various other gaming marketplaces.

For quite some time, we've been eager to craft a game within the Survivor genre. Our passion for such games runs deep, spurred on by the thrilling experiences we've had playing titles like "Vampire Survivors", "Soulstone Survivors", "Scarlet Tower", "Rogue Genesia", "Halls of Torment", and more. If you haven't yet had the chance to experience these games, we wholeheartedly recommend them. Each one is an excellent example of indie game development, either already boasting polished gameplay or currently in the exciting stages of development.

Alpha Gameplay for the MechJam IV - itch.io

We're working with the following optional Themes that has been given from the Jam Community.

Rogue - Wizardry - Frost - Dragons

Even prior to MechJam, we had contemplated creating a title within this genre. We seized the opportunity offered by MechJam to kickstart our Survivor game project, developing a prototype that incorporates the foundational elements of a Survivor game.

Given the brief window of just 14 days provided by MechJam, it's important to note that the game is neither polished nor balanced at this stage. The scope of a Survivor game is expansive and cannot be fully realized within such a limited timeframe.

What does the Alpha Offer?

The game features fundamental Survivor gameplay, complete with character leveling and improvements. The character can be navigated using a keyboard and mouse, and will face in the direction of the cursor.

Automatic shooting is enabled, and your mech boasts four persistent attributes that maintain progress throughout the levels, adhering to the roguelite genre. Additionally, there are four level upgrades that get reset upon death, following the roguelike conventions. Similarly, you can level up cards to fortify your mech, but be aware that this progress also gets reset after death, as per roguelike traditions.

Our game provides nine distinct weapons for you to discover and wield. However, true to the roguelike genre, any progress related to these weapons is lost upon death.

More Information

  • 4 Persistent Mech Attributes (Keep Progress throughout the Levels)  - Rougelite
  • 4 Level Upgrades (Progress get lost after Death) - Rougelike
  • Level up Cards to make the Mech stronger (Progress get lost after Death)  - Rougelike
  • 9 Different Weapons to find and play with (Progress get lost after Death)  - Rougelike
  • 1 Arena Map with difficult Settings: Wizardry, Frost, Dragons
    • Wizardry: Enemies randomly teleport inside the Screen around
    • Frost: It Snows the whole time and your Mech is moving Slower
    • Dragons: Every Minute a Dangerous Dragon spawns.

These difficulty settings serve as optional themes from MechJam. While they currently heighten the game's challenge, they do not yet provide any advantages towards your progress.

What do we have planned for the Game?

We worked 14 Days hard on this Prototype to get a fundamental Starting Point for our Survivor Game and wanna collect now during the Game Jam Votings process, already first impressions and feedback for the Game, to continue it the right way.

Final Words

Just Before we we're about to Build our Game without any Errors we started it. But unfortunaly the UI was bugged. Since now we have no Clue what exactly causes the problem but we have found a workaround for now

As the User Interface should look like this:

For no appearent reason, even the Canvas Scaler was Setup correctly, in the Unity Editor everything with the UI Scaling worked fine. But for some Reason whatever has his Anchor attached to the Top of the Screen it looses its y Position and gets pulled all the way to the top. Overlapping the UserInterface

And this all happens 10 Hours before the Game Jam Submission Ends. Now 6 Hours before we managed to fix the Problem by changing the Anchor Points of the Panels to the Center of the Screen, for some reason after setting this up the User Interface works great again in the Build version. So we moved on and finally implemented some Sounds and Music to give the Alpha Game some more intense.

Changing the Anchor Points to the Center fixxed the Problem

In this Picture the Anchor are set to the Top Left and for some reason in the Build he looses the y Position, i dont understand why as im not changing it during Runtime. As it also works properly when the Anchors are set to the Center of the Canvas.

Very Fishy and Uncommon, as i cannot explain what exactly happens. Someone has an idea?

Unfortunaly We couldn't fully implement the Low Battery Theme

The Time was to short, we planned to add a simple Knockback and Damage Effect but a couple Hours before Submitting we have to Build now and make sure everything works so far as intendet.

Once ur Battery is charged up, you can activate it by pressing the Space Key, however the Battery and Interface gets only reset to 0, but no further actions will happen for the Game Jam Version. Tell us what you think about Special Ultimates for Mechs or to Buy in a Shop.

As we continue to advance our development process, we would greatly appreciate your feedback on the game. Share your thoughts and suggestions with us - we're keen to know how we could enhance the game to make it more enjoyable and playable. After all, our primary goal is to craft this game for you, the player. We look forward to hearing from you and further fine-tuning "Kaiju Survivor" to meet your expectations
